In the late 50's he became disenchanted with performing and worked until the mid 60's as janitor in a funeral home. The new Hawks featured Herman Hassel on bass and Frank Kirkland on drums. They recorded for Vanguard Records "Chicago Blues Today" a compilation and an Album for Testament records and Delmark with Sunnyland Slim on piano.
After Hound Dog Taylor died in 1975 he took over his band, the House Rockers until he relocated to Boston in the late 70's were he founded the new Hawks with whom he recorded albums for Varrick. The last Album he recorded was "Slipin' & Slidin' for Varrick, re-issued as Rock with me Tonight, it was described as "near perfect".
